One thing we love almost as much as flowers is fashion, so when the two come together, for us, it’s absolutely showstopping. Imagine, then, how our hearts were all a flutter when the Met Gala, which took place on May 6th, celebrated the exhibition titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Vogue World Paris explains the retrospective’s title, “The forthcoming show has not to do with the Brothers Grimm or Disney but rather the celebration of clothing and fashion so fragile that it can’t ever be worn again—and are thus sleeping beauties in the scrupulous archives of the Costume Institute.”

Flowers do indeed reawaken fashion. The fragility of fashion in its appliqués, gossamers, and other delicate fabric and details is much like that of flowers, so the requested dress code of The Garden of Time certainly resonated. And the celebrities in attendance took it on, transforming the red carpet into one of the most fabulous flower shows we’ve ever seen. For instance, Gigi Hadid’s gown, designed by Thom Browne, had a tiered long white skirt covered with yellow roses and was inspired by classic Marilyn Monroe styles. The yellow roses on her gown are attached to green vines and thorns, giving this dress a whimsical and timeless feel.

In keeping with the night’s thread of timeless fashion, Zendaya, one of the hosts of the night, wore Vintage Givenchy. But it was her black tulle fascinator fit with a veritable garden of face-framing roses that truly made her look play so perfectly with the theme. The flowers, much like our arrangements, gave a nod to the meaning of flowers: Pink roses symbolize beauty and grace, red roses signify love and romance, and yellow roses mean joy and friendship. Plus, the vibrant roses gave this gown a pop of color that everyone is still talking about.

Demi Moore was another standout in a black column gown designed by Harris Reed. A heart-shaped structural feature added drama that was equally matched by the oversized pink and white chloris bloom popping off the bodice. The dress, made from repurposed vintage wallpaper with intricate silk embroidery, created the blooming effect as the A-lister walked the red carpet and tapped into the “fashion reawakened” trope.

This year, the Met Gala, its attendees, and the designers behind the scenes so keenly exhibited the link between flowers and fashion—be it subtle, dramatic, modern, vintage, esoteric, evident, or a spectacular combination. This event also confirmed to us that fashion trends, much like flowers, may wilt and be brought to life or be ever-changing and evolving as time goes on, encouraging us to look into the past and toward the next season as well, for all that may be reawakened or is yet to come.
